On September 10, 2014, Gov. Christie signed into law a bill amending the New Jersey Alimony Statute. (N.J.S.A. 2A:34-23). The major changes are: (1) Open durational alimony replaces permanent alimony; (2) Duration of Alimony is now tied to the length of the marriage; and (3) There are new guidelines with respect to modification or termination of an obligor’s payments relating to loss of employment or self-employed parties; retirement of the obligor and recipient’s cohabitation with a new partner. Also, there is a rebuttable presumption in favor of the termination of alimony payments when an obligor reaches full retirement age.
